Powercraft Courses

These courses are designed to give members the skills and knowledge to operate the powercraft used in lifesaving such as the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) for aquatic rescue and the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) on the beach.

  

IRB Crew

To achieve the IRB Crew Certificate course you must be:

  • Minimum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold a Bronze Medallion award

The course involves approximately 20 hours of training and practical experience conducted in a mix of night theory training and weekend practical training.

No further courses will be conducted this season.

Assessment involves a theory exam and practical demonstration of Dry Land and Crew Watercraft Skills, including IRB operation, Patient Rescues and Boat Maintenance.

  

IRB Driver (Silver Medallion)

To achieve the Silver Medallion - IRB Driver you must have met the following course pre-requisites:

  • Minimum of 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Complete 10 hours pre-assessment experience as a crewperson (as evidenced by your log)
  • Hold a current and valid Victorian Marine Licence
  • Hold and be currently proficient in the SLSA Bronze Medallion and IRB Crew Certificatee Medallion
  • Already achieved the units of competency shown below:
(For SLSA participants these competencies will usually have been achieved as part of the SLSA Bronze Medallion award)

Pre-requisite units of competency

Bronze Medallion:

  • PUACOM001B Communicate in the workplace
  • PUAEME001A Provide emergency care
  • PUAOPE002A Operate communication systems and equipment

The course involves approximately 26 hours of training and practical experience conducted in a mix of night theory training and weekend practical training.

No further courses will be conducted this season.

  

Assessment involves a theory exam and practical demonstration of Dry Land and IRB Driver Watercraft Skills, including IRB operation, Patient Rescues and Boat and Motor Maintenance.

  

All Terrain Vehicle

To attend this course you must hold a current Victorian (or equivalent) driver’s licence for a motor vehicle or motor cycle.

This is a facilitated course – assessment is conducted concurrently with training.  

  

There will be no further courses this season.
